Ready for a thrilling rags-to-riches story? Wattpad brings you a guest post by Edward Mullen, writer of “The Art of the Hustle”:
“From underdog to billionaire, Trevor Morrison is the epitome of success. But money was never the goal…”
From Rags to Riches: The Pursuit of Success
Trevor Morrison is a true underdog. He graduated high school and was desperate to find his purpose in life.
With no discernible talent other than a desire to lift himself out of his situation, he set off to make the best use of the hand he was dealt. Ten years later, Trevor is a self-made billionaire and running one of the largest companies in the world.
Author J.K. Rowling has a similar, but real-life rags-to-riches story. When she was 29 years old, she considered herself to be the biggest failure. She was an unemployed single mother with no money, and had a mountain of unpaid bills. Her marriage had recently fallen apart and to top it all off, her mother had just passed away. Soon after that, Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression and even contemplated suicide.
Instead of giving up, she pursued her passion for writing as a way of coping. Her big idea was to write a story about a boy wizard named Harry Potter using emotions and experiences from her life.
At a Harvard commencement speech in 2008, J.K. Rowling said,
“Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy to finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one area where I truly belonged. So rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”
Somewhere along the way, Trevor Morrison and J.K. Rowling were taught some really powerful lessons on hustle:
1. Work hard
2. Be determined
3. Turn your negatives into positives
4. Believe in yourself
